Anyone Can Build an App Now
I genuinely believe we’ve hit an inflection point. If you have an idea for an app, you can build it. Not “someday when you learn to code.” Right now. Today.
Claude Opus is the reason. It’s not a chatbot that spits out code snippets you don’t understand. It’s more like having a senior engineer sitting next to you, building your project with you, asking clarifying questions, and writing real, working code. You describe what you want, and it builds it.
I’ve watched people with zero programming experience go from an idea to a working app in an afternoon. That used to take months of learning, or thousands of dollars hiring a developer. The barrier to entry for building software just disappeared.
What You Need
A Mac. That’s it. If you have a Mac, you have everything you need to get started. I’m going to walk you through the exact steps to go from nothing to building your first project. No prior experience required.
Step 1: Open Terminal
Terminal is an app that comes pre-installed on every Mac. It’s how you talk to your computer directly. Don’t let it intimidate you — it’s just a text box where you type commands.
Open Spotlight by pressing Command + Space, type Terminal, and hit Enter. You’ll see a window with a blinking cursor. That’s it. You’re in.
Step 2: Install Xcode Command Line Tools
Xcode Command Line Tools is a package from Apple that gives your Mac the basic tools it needs to build software. You don’t need to understand what it does — just think of it as unlocking your Mac’s ability to run developer tools.
In your Terminal, type this and hit Enter:
xcode-select --install
A popup will appear asking you to install. Click Install and wait for it to finish. It might take a few minutes.
Step 3: Install Homebrew
Homebrew is a tool that makes it easy to install other tools. Think of it like an app store for your Terminal. Almost every developer uses it.
Paste this into your Terminal and hit Enter:
/bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)"
It’ll ask for your password (the one you use to log into your Mac). Type it in — you won’t see the characters appear, but they’re being entered. Hit Enter and let it run.
Important: When it finishes, Homebrew will print a “Next steps” section with a couple of commands to run. Copy and paste those commands into your Terminal and run them. This makes sure Homebrew is ready to use.
Step 4: Install Bun
Bun is a tool that runs JavaScript and lets you install packages (think of packages as building blocks other people have made that you can use in your projects). It’s fast and simple.
brew install oven-sh/bun/bun
That’s it. Bun is installed.
Step 5: Install Claude Code
This is the magic. Claude Code is Anthropic’s command-line tool that lets you work with Claude directly in your Terminal. It can read your files, write code, run commands, and build entire projects with you.
bun i -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code
This installs Claude Code globally on your machine so you can use it from anywhere.
Step 6: Create Your Project Folder
Let’s make a dedicated folder for your project. This keeps things organized.
mkdir -p ~/projects && cd ~/projects
This creates a projects folder in your home directory and moves you into it.
Step 7: Clone the Starter Template
I’ve put together a starter repo that gives you a solid foundation to build on. It’s already set up with everything you need so you can skip the boring configuration and jump straight to building.
git clone https://github.com/jackgisel/vibe-starter.git my-app
cd my-app
bun install
Replace my-app with whatever you want to name your project. This downloads the template, moves you into the folder, and installs all the dependencies.
Step 8: Start Building
Now for the fun part. Start Claude Code:
claude
That’s it. Claude is now running in your Terminal, looking at your project. You can talk to it like you’d talk to a coworker.
Try something like:
- “Add a landing page with a hero section and a signup form”
- “Create a page that shows a list of items I can add and remove”
- “Make a dashboard that displays some charts”
Claude will read your existing files, understand the project structure, write the code, and even run the dev server for you. If something breaks, tell it. It’ll fix it. If you want something changed, describe it. It’ll update it.
You’re not learning to code here. You’re building. Claude handles the code. You handle the vision.
A Shift in Who Gets to Build
For the longest time, software was gatekept by technical knowledge. You either learned to code or you paid someone who did. Opus changes that equation. The ideas that have been stuck in people’s heads — the app that would make their small business run smoother, the tool that would help their community, the side project they’ve been dreaming about — those can exist now.
You don’t need a CS degree. You don’t need a bootcamp. You need a Mac, 20 minutes of setup, and a clear idea of what you want to build.
